Most people just don't get it: This isn't technical. It's about protecting liberty. Why should the government have access to all the email, phone and web data on us? Until recently, you had to be a suspected criminal to get this kind of attention. Yes, that's right: we now have a "snoopers charter".

If you outlaw privacy, only outlaws will have privacy. This kind of shortsighted legislation isn't going to stop criminals from using encryption any more than a mandatory ID card scheme could regulate the black market. The only thing we can be certain it will do is raise the price of UK-based telecoms services.
